    Driving too fast in Sumner

Many Sumner residents have been complaining about cars driving through the neighborhood at excessive speeds.  Some may assume that the speed limit within Sumner is more than the speed limit in Sumner, posted at each entrance:  AT ALL TIMES, THE SPEED LIMIT IN SUMNER IS 25 MILES per HOUR.

Our neighborhood is a wonderful place to walk and to be outside.  There are folks of all ages out at differing times of day, mid-morning strollers, late night dog walkers, children going to or returning from school.  Many streets do not have sidewalks or have only a sidewalk on ones side of the street.  Folks of all ages ride bikes in the neighborhood.

Many people park their cars along the curb. They should also be able to feel comfortable doing that, unlike one neighbor whose car has been sideswiped more than once.

The SCA Board has begun efforts to work with the Montgomery County authorities on the speeding issue.  Please cooperate with Montgomery County personnel when you see them and answer their questions.  Also, please send complaints and ideas for solutions to Rich Landfield, marsha Barnes, or Phil Wilcox.

Let us all keep all of Sumner a place where it is safe and pleasant to walk or ride a bike. Let us all remember too that a speed limit is just that -- a maximum speed.  How fast we drive must be affected by the circumstances.  Weather, parked cars, the presence of children, walkers, runners, bikers, dog walkers, and others on the streets, the absence of sidewalks:  all these may require speeds less than the posted speed.  They certainly require that the maximum speed be the speed limit.

Thank you for your consideration of others, for your cooperation, and for not driving too fast.  Rich Landfield, President

    Dear Neighbors:

Longtime Sumner resident Mona Hanford has been Development professional and an eldercare activist. Before that she earned a Masters degree in Russian. Most recently she has been working a book which is out this week. Titled “The Graceful Exit: TenThings You Need to Know” Mona takes on the challenging subject of end-of-life care providing invaluable support and guidance for individuals and their families. Surgeon and former Senator Bill Frist admires her pragmatic approach. In his introduction he cites her for “expertly discussing the ten things you need to know to navigate the inevitable with hope and grace.”

The book is available on Amazon.

https://youtu.be/7cYip3TMG54 is a link to an interview with Mona about the book.

Below is a sketch of Mona. Many neighborhood walkers will easily recognize our Sumner author.

The illustrator thought the author’s page in my book needed a sketch.

    A Letter From The President

    December 5, 2017

    Dear Members,

The Sumner Citizens Association has contributed another $5,000 to the SaveWestbard legal fund.  At its meeting in early November, the Board of Directors decided that further support of the litigation opposing excessive development for Westbard was in the best interest of the Sumner community and would not affect SCA’s operations.  We decided to ask the members of the Association for their views about the contribution.  A poll was conducted on the SCA website on Wild Apricot (www.sca.wildapricot.org) and during the week that it was open, we reminded members and offered help in using the poll website.

At the present time, there are 227 members eligible to vote.  Of those, 101 participated and 82 members supported the Board’s decision to make the additional contribution.

On behalf of the Board of Directors, I thank those who participated and told us what they think of the Board’s decision.

    Happy holidays!

    Rich Landfield,

    President

Hi neighbors, I'd love to know if I'm the only one with this question, but for several years, at very intermittent and unpredictable times, my wife and I have heard what sounds like dynamite explosions for excavation a long distance away. They are muted "thuds" by the time they get to our ears but suggest a pile driver or something substantial, coming from the south or southwest of Sumner.

The pattern is always 12 to 20 thuds, spaced within about five seconds of each other. The intermittent nature makes it impossible to prepare an attempt to triangulate where they're coming from. Most recently early this week at around 8:00a. Very frustrating.

I finally put the question to the media relations person at DC Water, thinking the Dalecarlia reservoir might be able to explain. She got back to me right away (yay) and referred me to Tom Jacobus, the head of the Washington Aqueduct, who also got back to me right away (yay) but neither had any answers. My only theory is goose cannons at the reservoir but you'd think Jacobus would know about that.

    Any enlightenment?

    Thanks!

    David and Robin Sproul
