Driving too fast in Sumner
Many Sumner residents have been complaining about cars driving through the neighborhood at excessive speeds. Some may assume that the speed limit within Sumner is more than the speed limit in Sumner, posted at each entrance: AT ALL TIMES, THE SPEED LIMIT IN SUMNER IS 25 MILES per HOUR.
Our neighborhood is a wonderful place to walk and to be outside. There are folks of all ages out at differing times of day, mid-morning strollers, late night dog walkers, children going to or returning from school. Many streets do not have sidewalks or have only a sidewalk on ones side of the street. Folks of all ages ride bikes in the neighborhood.
Many people park their cars along the curb. They should also be able to feel comfortable doing that, unlike one neighbor whose car has been sideswiped more than once.
The SCA Board has begun efforts to work with the Montgomery County authorities on the speeding issue. Please cooperate with Montgomery County personnel when you see them and answer their questions. Let us all keep all of Sumner a place where it is safe and pleasant to walk or ride a bike. Let us all remember too that a speed limit is just that -- a maximum speed. How fast we drive must be affected by the circumstances. Weather, parked cars, the presence of children, walkers, runners, bikers, dog walkers, and others on the streets, the absence of sidewalks: all these may require speeds less than the posted speed. They certainly require that the maximum speed be the speed limit.
